Joining the registry at 17

What happens when you sign up at 17?

Signing up at 17 is a simple way to get involved early and start making a difference.

Once you register and send back your swab sample, we’ll test it to learn your HLA tissue type. Once we have your results, they will be stored securely on the registry and you may be included in patient searches, helping give hope to people waiting for a stem cell transplant.

But, because you’re under 18, you won’t be able to donate just yet. If you’re ever identified as a match, we’ll wait until you turn 18 before talking about a potential donation.

After your 18th birthday, you’ll officially be available on the registry, and we’ll contact you if you’re matched with a patient. Until then, simply returning your swab helps expand the search for patients who are waiting for someone just like you.

Why you should consider becoming a stem cell donor

Each year, around 1,300 Aussie patients facing life-threatening blood cancer search for a donor. Around 30% of them will find their best match within their family, leaving the remainder dependent on volunteer donors, like you.

Younger donors deliver better outcomes for patients, so we need 17–35-year-old Aussies to register and increase the chances of finding the best possible matches for those in need. It’s also critical that we expand the diversity of our donor pool, as patients are more likely to match with someone of the same ethnicity.

The solution is simple:
more donors, more matches, more hope for patients.
